A nearly Subway in Ulaanbaatar…

About: , , , ,

This review was written by Christopher de Gruben for City Night magazine in May 2009.

In a relatively obscure location on Peace Ave. near the State Department store lies a little sandwich shop that you could walk right by without noticing. Walking in I was a bit surprised to see whatlooks like a Subway, right here in UB.

The atmosphere is quaint and warm with some random hockey decorations, large bookshelf and a comfortable color scheme. Sitting behind the sandwich counter is Tyler, one of the shop owners, who has no problem telling you what the best sandwich of the day is and also probably telling you what’s on his mind.

Sub’baatar is the result of a collaboration between three foreign expats who just wanted a good sandwich and couldn’t find an acceptable alternative in the city. According to Tyler they make all of the bread fresh everyday and also have a wide selection of sandwiches, pita wraps and pastries.

I order a ham and cheese wrap and some potato soup and just like Subway back home I am able to pick and choose what toppings I want on it. The seating area is a bit cramped but fine and there isn’t too many people around to feel claustrophobic.

The wrap I ordered was basic, tasty and a nice change from the greasy heavy fare I am used to. The cup of soup was small, but gave me just enough more food to make me feel full. The menu seems big enough so as not to get too bored with any particular sandwich and Tyler assured me that new options would be available this summer.

So if you can find it, Sub’baatar offers a refreshing taste and good quality food
