Isn’t doing a website about oneself the peak of ego and personal gratification?

When interesting and famous people do their own website there is an interesting aspect of voyeurism in the sordid details of their life, or even maybe their achievements,  but why would an accidental entrepreneur lost in the vastness of Mongolia need his own website?

I have toyed with the idea of doing my own website for a while; I hope not for reasons of ego and personal gratification but rather to assist me in selling something important, myself.

I have spent the past eight and a bit years learning about and working in the field of marketing, during that time I have learned (often by trial and error) a reasonable amount about the industry. Primarily that what can be seen can be sold; this is a basic marketing concept that, while not universally true, has its merits.

But how does one sell oneself? Well, there is of course the traditionally accepted Curriculum Vitae.

I have one; I have spent a lot of time improving it but have always found the “maximum 2/3 pages rule” needlessly constrictive. I have already done so much in both my professional and personal life, how can it fit in such a short space? Which bits to choose?

Wishing to supplement the “C.V experience”, I have evolved towards social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, etc… Sadly the more I used those sites, the more I found myself restricted to the specific functions of each site, however good they might be.

I lacked a central space where I could bring together all those elements. Thus, slowly, emerged the need for my own little corner of the internet; a place where I can effectively present who and what I am.

With this extraordinary advertising medium, I have the space and freedom to explore and share my thoughts, opinions and experiences. I have no restrictions on how it is to be presented, what information should be included and what format it needs to be. It’s my own space to attractively organize all the various bits of my life in a single, effective, portal.

Beyond a marketing tool it is also meant to be an interactive storage area for my own life story, I wish to occasionally gaze upon all my press clippings, recall fondly all the stupid investments I have made and happily recollect on those times wasted at school….

Are you a potential business partner, a potential employer, a long lost friend or even just a random visitor? I hope that regardless of your purpose in visiting this site, you find it informative and hopefully there is something in here that will make you think…
